Description

The Peruvian Retablo is a result of a merger between European and Indigenous customs. Once the Spanish had militarily conquered the Inca empire, they pushed to convert the indigenous population to Christianity. One of the various Spanish customs adopted by the Indians was that of the portable shrine. As it evolved, this form of box-like Retablo came to contain some of the most powerful figures of Spanish Catholicism. Religious traditions and spiritual culture are very important to the Peruvian people. Many of their crafts and art are a reflection of this.
